Costing

Recipes & Product Costing

Most makers underprice because their cost per unit leaves things out. GodKey builds it from what you actually paid — including freight — and spreads the cost of rejected units over the good ones, so the number is honest.

What you can do

  • Recipes (bills of materials) with ingredients, yield and versions
  • Standard cost (what it should cost) and actual cost (what it did cost)
  • Freight, duty and handling on a receipt spread into the materials’ cost
  • Labor from dated labor rates
  • Rejected units absorbed by the good units — divided by what you can sell
  • Says “incomplete” and names the missing ingredient cost, instead of showing a number that’s too low

A cost per unit you can price from

When a batch is completed you enter how many you started, how many came out good and how many were rejected. GodKey divides the batch cost over the good units only, so the cost of a cracked candle or a failed bar lands where it belongs — on the ones you sell.

Freight is the other cost makers forget. When you receive an order, its freight, duty and handling are spread across the lines by value and become part of each material’s cost.

Honest when something is missing

If an ingredient has no cost yet, the recipe tells you the cost is incomplete and names the ingredient — rather than quietly showing a lower number you might price from.

What’s not included yet

Overhead (rent, power, equipment wear) isn’t allocated to products yet — add it in your pricing. Try our free cost per unit calculator to see what overhead adds per unit.

Questions

Does the cost per unit include freight?

Yes. Freight, duty and handling on a receipt are spread across its lines by value and included in each material’s cost.

How are rejected or wasted units handled?

When you complete a batch you record good and rejected units. The batch cost is divided over the good units, so rejects raise the cost of the units you can sell — which is what really happens.

Does GodKey MFG include overhead in product cost?

Not yet. Materials, freight-in and labor are included; overhead allocation isn’t built. Our free cost per unit calculator shows how to add it when you set prices.
